Blastermind is a new Magic Trap Master making his debut in Trap Team. Blastermind wasn’t always a Psychic powerhouse. He used to just be the “hide and sheep” champion of the Sardonic Mountains. One day, when he was about to set a new Skylands record, the ground beneath him collapsed and Blastermind fell into a deep, mysterious cavern filled with shimmering crystals. His friends were all at the top of the hole when a large Ham Dragon showed up having been disturbed by the rumble of the collapse. Blastermind felt helpless he worried greatly for his friends and desperately wanted to save them. What he didn’t know, was that those shimmering crystals lining the hole he fell in, were actually Psionic Power Crystals that the Ancients had used to amplify their thoughts. The crystals heard Blastermind’s worried thoughts about saving his friends and gave him awesome psionic powers. He used those powers to get himself out of the hole and to mentally blast the circling Ham Dragon. After that, Blastermind joined the Skylanders where he became a member of the Trap Team.
Chill Bill is a Water trappable villain that you will be able to capture in the fourth level – Phoenix Psanctuary. Chill Bill is a radio DJ by day, and a crazy Troll who freezes people with is ice gun, well… all of the time. He’s got one of the best channels on the radios found throughout the game, and we think his theme music is very catchy. Don’t forget, Chill Bill was evil beforeit was cool.
Spotlight is a new core Light Skylander making her debut in Trap Team. She isn’t just any new Skylander, she is the first core Skylander of the Light element, which debuted in Trap Team. However, she had been in Skylands before. Master Eon found her in the Prismatic Palace when he was looking for the Crystal Orb of Light. When he found the orb, he reached out to touch it, which caused bright light to shine out of the orb. The light was so bright Master Eon had to shield his eyes. When he was able to lower his hand, he saw Spotlight standing before him in a respectful bow. He had not seen a Light Element creature before since it was not one of the eight common elements of Skylands. He sensed that the Ancients set her to him for a reason so he took Spotlight to the Core of Light and trained her to defend it as a member of the Skylanders. But when Kaos destroyed the Core of Light, Spotlight mysteriously vanished. Only now has she finally re-appeared.
Today Activision announced the fifth game in the Skylanders series: Skylanders Superchargers. The new game will feature land, sea, and air vehicles for Skylanders to pilot during their adventures. There will be a total of 20 new vehicles to collect. These vehicles will transport into the game via the portal just like Skylander figures do. However, unlike Skylanders figures, these vehicles do not have bases, so you can actually play with the vehicles. Hot Streak, which comes with the game, is a car with wheels that actually roll making it a more playable Skylander toy. Even if the vehicles don’t have wheels like Dive Bomber and Sky Slicer they still will have moving parts and be more fun to play with outside of the game.
So I know what you are thinking, “Vehicles? Great now we have even more to buy!” Well, that’s not really true this year. This time around, the character collecting will be more reasonable. There will only be 40 new toys to collect. 20 of them are vehicles and 20 of them are new or returning Skylander figures. That is just two vehicles and two Skylanders per element (yes, light and dark are elements are coming back). Some characters are returning like Super Shot Stealth Elf, while others like Spitfire and Stormblade are brand new.
There is no word yet on how many figures will be returning vs. being brand new, but the returning characters are going to be very different. Super Shot Stealth Elf not only looks different but will also have new skills and powers. There will be no mistaking which game the returning figures belong to.
You might expect that a new portal will be required. Surprisingly it is not. Old portals will work with Skylanders Superchargers. However, the new portal looks pretty cool, and seems a bit bigger which will probably be good for what appears to be larger vehicles. This new portal is slightly larger and shaped like a race track so that you can fit a vehicle and a character on it at the same time. On the downside, villains captured from Trap Team will NOT be playable in Superchargers. However, they will unlock special Skystones for the Skystones mini game.
Each vehicle will have special challenges or races to compete in on various levels. They are like the movement challenges in Swap Force. Rewards found in these challenges can be vehicle mods. You can then install these mods to give your vehicle better stats. It’s sort of like finding a hat for your Skylander but much cooler. Also, if you pair a vehicle with the right Skylander, you will be able to enter a special supercharged mode for even more power. It sounds like there is a lot to look forward to in Superchargers.
When I first heard the rumors of a vehicle based Skylanders game, I was a little skeptical. But now that I’ve watched the trailer and have seen some footage, I am pretty excited. I think it will be a lot of fun, and for my kids, it will probably give them more exposure to racing and flying gameplay which will surely make other games with that kind of gameplay more attractive to play.
I’m also excited that it won’t cost and arm and a leg (hopefully) to buy all of the figures and vehicles. I have not yet seen any pricing on vehicles so I’m assuming they won’t be more expensive than a Swap Force figure. So buckle up and get ready to go on a ride. Skylanders Superchargers will be here before you know it. It will be released on September 20th which I believe is the earliest release of a Skylanders game yet.
The Gulper is a Water trappable villain that you will be able to capture at the end of the first level – Soda Springs. He is the first Doom Raider villain you will be able to catch. From an early age, The Gulper had an enormous appetite and insatiable thirst for anything he could stuff in his mouth. At a young age, he won first place in the annual Deep-Fried-Triple-Cheeseburger eating contest and has worn the Crown of Gluttony every since. However, it is his love for soda which causes him to grow to colossal proportions and go on rampages. This caught the eye of the Golden Queen. The Golden Queen was looking to recruit someone who was incredibly dim-witted so that if they were ever captured, the Skylanders would not be able to extract any useful information. The Gulper fit that description perfectly.
Thunderbolt is a new Air Trap Master making his debut in Trap Team. He grew up on the legendary Mount Cloudpierce. He was always extremely strong and very competitive, so when his people held a contest for the legendary Storm Sword, Thunderbolt had to win it. The Storm Sword was a legendary blade with the power to change the seasons in Skylands. For Thunderbolt, this would be a great honor to have. Thunderbolt won the contest and was about to be awarded the sword when a Frost Mage stole it and plunged all of Skylands into a wintery deep-freeze. Thunderbolt took up the chase, riding twin bolts of chained lightning. He quickly caught the mage, reclaimed the sword and restored balance to the weather in Skylands. For his heroic actions, Thunderbolt was made a member of the Trap Team and now uses the Traptanium Storm Sword to fight evil.
Skylanders Trap Team Toys are now in McDonalds Happy Meals. Watch as we open and try out all six of the new toys for this year’s Skylanders game in our Trap Team McDonalds Toy Unboxing.
Bruiser Cruiser is a Tech trappable villain that you will be able to capture in level 3 – Chompy Mountain. His quest is in the same level, so if you backtrack just a bit after you capture him, you’ll be able to evolve him right away. Bruiser Cruiser is a former troll boxing champion with a wicked one-two punch and a very large mech suit that mimics his every move.
This week the new toy in the Happy Meal at McDonalds are Skylanders Trap Team toys. I believe this is the third year that McDonalds has had a Happy Meal promotion with Skylander Toys. It started with Skylanders Skylanders Giants, and continued with Swap Force. Now there are six toys to collect in Happy Meals, featuring Skylanders and Villains from Trap Team. The characters available are in the picture. Happy (meal) hunting!
