After checking out several of the retail websites this morning, it became obvious that most of the SuperChargers Wave 1 characters are available for Pre-Order at several popular retailers. It also showed a couple of new exclusives and alternate versions which are also available for Pre-Order. Best Buy also showed a couple of Dual Packs available for pre-order, but these have a release date of 10/2. This possibly could be the date for Wave 2, so stay tuned. In the past Wave 2 follows almost immediately after Wave 1, so it’s possible. It also doesn’t say what is in the dual packs, so it could be combos of Skylanders released with Wave 1. For example, the dual pack could include maybe Stormblade and the Sky Slicer, or it could be a brand new Skylander and vehicle combo. My bet would be on Skylanders that have already come out in single packs, so you may want to wait. You would only about $3 on a pair though, so it might be worth getting them separately. We probably will know soon, as Best Buy will probably update their website any day. For now lets’ check out what is available for Wave 1.
UPDATE: Well, this morning I got an e-mail from GameStop, and sure enough they advertised that Frightful Fiesta will be “first” at GameStop. I guess even Skylanders now have timed exclusives. Also, Target is showing a Nitro Stealth Stinger, but only if you search for Skylanders and not SuperChargers.
Last week at Gamescom 2015 we got some interesting new Skylanders news about the new SuperChargers game. The biggest and most interesting news was something that we’ve been asking about for a while. Skylanders SuperChargers will feature online co-op gameplay for the first time. You and a friend online will now be able to tackle the adventure together. But that’s not all. SuperChargers will have a large focus on vehicle racing as well. There will be an all new Racing Mode featured in the game which will have different Land, Sea and Sky environments. Six dynamic tracks will come with the game two for each of the different environments. It sounds like the racing will have similarities to Mario Kart in terms of vehicular racing combat, short cuts, and speed boosts but it will all have that familiar Skylander feel to them. Players can also race online in this mode with up to four people online or race on the couch in split screen.
Activision also announced three Racing Packs that will be coming during the SuperChargers release. Each racing pack will focus on one of the three car types, Land, Sea, and Sky. They will come with one vehicle and one SuperCharger Skylander and a villain trophy. The villain trophy will open up new tracks, new modes and new challenges. You’ll also be able to face 12 villains across the 3 packs where you will gain access to the villains signature vehicle and attacks once you defeat them. It sounds a lot like the Adventure Packs in the past, and we wonder will these racing packs replace those Adventure Packs, or might there be more story level add-ons planned in the future as well?
It sounds like we will be playing a very different Skylanders game this year, and we will be playing it Online! We can’t wait! Check out the official Skylanders SuperChargers overview trailer from Gamescom 2015 below.
For each of the past two Skylanders games, there has been a special Dark Edition version of the game containing Dark variants of the starter pack characters. Well this year, because there are three different normal versions of the game, there will be three SuperChargers Dark Editions of the game. Both the Wii U and the Wii will be getting their own dark edition because they each come with a different special Nintendo character.
At the Nintendo Direct for E3, Activision unveiled two new Skylanders and two new Signature Vehicles coming specifically to the Nintendo versions of SuperChargers. These characters will be Skylanders in the Skylanders game, but a unique twist of their base will transform the characters into Amiibos to be used in other Amiibo supported Nintendo titles. Hammer Slam Bowser, and Turbo Charge Donkey Kong will be the two new Skylanders. They will be driving the Clown Cruiser and Barrel Blaster respectively. From looking at the characters closely, it appears that Turbo Charge Donkey Kong will be a Life Element, and Hammer Slam Bowser will be a Fire Element. I can only assume that these are in addition to the already mentioned 20 characters and vehicles available to the game but I have not heard any word from Activision about this yet. These are the first Skylanders to be platform specific, so if you want to play with these characters you will want to grab one of the Nintendo versions of Skylanders SuperChargers.
Today Activision announced the fifth game in the Skylanders series: Skylanders Superchargers. The new game will feature land, sea, and air vehicles for Skylanders to pilot during their adventures. There will be a total of 20 new vehicles to collect. These vehicles will transport into the game via the portal just like Skylander figures do. However, unlike Skylanders figures, these vehicles do not have bases, so you can actually play with the vehicles. Hot Streak, which comes with the game, is a car with wheels that actually roll making it a more playable Skylander toy. Even if the vehicles don’t have wheels like Dive Bomber and Sky Slicer they still will have moving parts and be more fun to play with outside of the game.
So I know what you are thinking, “Vehicles? Great now we have even more to buy!” Well, that’s not really true this year. This time around, the character collecting will be more reasonable. There will only be 40 new toys to collect. 20 of them are vehicles and 20 of them are new or returning Skylander figures. That is just two vehicles and two Skylanders per element (yes, light and dark are elements are coming back). Some characters are returning like Super Shot Stealth Elf, while others like Spitfire and Stormblade are brand new.
There is no word yet on how many figures will be returning vs. being brand new, but the returning characters are going to be very different. Super Shot Stealth Elf not only looks different but will also have new skills and powers. There will be no mistaking which game the returning figures belong to.
You might expect that a new portal will be required. Surprisingly it is not. Old portals will work with Skylanders Superchargers. However, the new portal looks pretty cool, and seems a bit bigger which will probably be good for what appears to be larger vehicles. This new portal is slightly larger and shaped like a race track so that you can fit a vehicle and a character on it at the same time. On the downside, villains captured from Trap Team will NOT be playable in Superchargers. However, they will unlock special Skystones for the Skystones mini game.
Each vehicle will have special challenges or races to compete in on various levels. They are like the movement challenges in Swap Force. Rewards found in these challenges can be vehicle mods. You can then install these mods to give your vehicle better stats. It’s sort of like finding a hat for your Skylander but much cooler. Also, if you pair a vehicle with the right Skylander, you will be able to enter a special supercharged mode for even more power. It sounds like there is a lot to look forward to in Superchargers.
When I first heard the rumors of a vehicle based Skylanders game, I was a little skeptical. But now that I’ve watched the trailer and have seen some footage, I am pretty excited. I think it will be a lot of fun, and for my kids, it will probably give them more exposure to racing and flying gameplay which will surely make other games with that kind of gameplay more attractive to play.
I’m also excited that it won’t cost and arm and a leg (hopefully) to buy all of the figures and vehicles. I have not yet seen any pricing on vehicles so I’m assuming they won’t be more expensive than a Swap Force figure. So buckle up and get ready to go on a ride. Skylanders Superchargers will be here before you know it. It will be released on September 20th which I believe is the earliest release of a Skylanders game yet.
